The story signifies the importance of love and forgiveness. After one year of separation, fate would converge their paths again. Following the poisoning of one of his kits, Pax despairs and remembers Peter as the only human who can help him. The repair of water streams makes Pax catch his scent. However, he is cautious not to find himself committed to anyone lest they die or abandon him.

The group’s name is Water Warriors and Peter befriends other members like Jade and Samuel. The feeling of loneliness obliges Peter to join a group of young people repairing watercourses poisoned during the war. The experience has made Peter to believe that love and care for others bring him pain rather than happiness. However, no memory hurts him more than that of Pax. The boy occasionally experiences memories of people he adored. Peter’s grandfather is not friendly and casts doubt in every person including his kin. During the war, his father dies and Peter is left only with one relative, his grandfather. Peter was compelled by his father to part ways with Pax and join his grandfather who lived away from their home. One calm morning, Pax smells a strange but familiar scent. Pax does not bother with the kits and goes back to join his family. During one of his many excursions in the forest, Pax comes across a warren with two dead kits. Pax is worried that Bristle has not been taking food of late. The memories of Peter and his cage are fresh in his mind. The story begins with Pax running haphazardly in the forest. A year after Peter abandoned him, Pax went to the forest and get married to Bristle. The chapters alternate between Peter and Pax until their paths converge.
